MANDELA INSTITUTE
The Mandela Institute is a leading university centre undertaking research, policy development, and capacity building at the intersection between economics and law. Its mandate is to advance the field of economic regulation. The Institute also runs the program of continuing legal education at the Wits School of Law. The research and teaching thrusts of the Mandela Institute are dynamic and aim to advance research and policy in the areas of business regulation, trade, investment, competition, financial services, intellectual property, mining, and a just transition to a green economy.
Applications are sought for the position of Director for a five (5) year contract. The Director heads the Mandela Institute and reports to the Head of School of Law. The successful candidate will offer intellectual leadership, a vision for the Mandela Institute, significant experience in the field of economic regulation, an understanding of continuing legal education, managerial competence, a demonstrated ability to liaise with donors, raise funds and have the stature to represent the Mandela Institute both within the university and the world.
QUALIFICATIONS: A legal academic at the level of Professor and Associate Professor (applicants should hold a PHD and must provide evidence of scholarly work published in refereed journals at the professorial level or Associate Professor level) or Adjunct Professor (a practitioner of stature with a distinguished record). Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to advancing the cause of South African and African knowledge and capacity in the research and teaching thrusts of the Mandela Institute. It would be advantage to have experience in policy development and policy analysis in the area of law and economics. Duties: The development of a strategic vision for the Mandela Institute and its implementation, leading the development of a research agenda, developing the policy engagement profile of the Institute, the oversight of continuing legal education programmes, the management of the staff of the Mandela Institute, raising funds for the Mandela Institute, engaging in academic research and teaching, and developing and fostering local and international partnerships.
