The Mandela Institute is a unit in the Wits School of Law with a mission to develop the legal tools needed to engage with global economic forces. It runs highly successful executive short courses, a research programme, and public engagement events in various areas of law and policy for government, industry, community organisations, and legal practitioners.

In continuing to grow its research footprint, the Institute requires a Senior Researcher to provide and publish high quality research in one or more of the following areas of law international trade and investment law, prospecting and mining law, law and development in a global context. Reporting to the Director, the Senior Researcher will be expected to analyse the implications of global economic law for domestic law, to draft research-funding proposals, to publish research, to do limited lecturing in the area of mining/extractives law and postgraduate supervision, and to provide other forms of academic support to the Director.

As a minimum, the successful applicant must have a PhD in Law from a reputable university in any field listed above, excellent research skills with an established track record of publications in accredited law journals, experience in research project coordination, grant writing and an interest in contemporary African perspectives on global regulatory and economic issues. He or she will be highly motivated, able to work independently with minimum supervision, and will be committed to progressive policy formulation for South Africa and Africa.

This is an academic position in a small but highly motivated Mandela Institute team operating in a renowned South African Law School. It has an attractive remuneration package and conditions of service. The post is a fixed term three-year (3) grant-funded post, but may be renewed at the discretion of the employer, all subject to availability of funding, and satisfactory performance especially research publication.
